Stuffed cabbage rolls, also known as cabbage rolls or golabki, are a delicious and hearty dish. Here’s a recipe for making classic stuffed cabbage rolls:
Ingredients:
FOR THE CABBAGE ROLLS:
- 1 large head of cabbage
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef
- 1 cup cooked rice
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
FOR THE TOMATO SAUCE:
- 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1 can (14 oz) tomato sauce
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
PREPARE THE CABBAGE:
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Core the cabbage and carefully place it in the boiling water. Boil for about 5-7 minutes until the outer leaves are tender and pliable. Remove the leaves and set them aside. Continue until you have enough leaves for the filling.
- Trim the thick part of the cabbage leaves to make them easier to roll.
PREPARE THE FILLING:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, and dried thyme. Mix well.
ASSEMBLE THE CABBAGE ROLLS:
- Take a cabbage leaf and place a portion of the filling in the center. Fold the sides over the filling and then roll it up tightly, like a burrito. Place the roll seam-side down in a large baking dish.
- Repeat the process until all the filling is used or you run out of cabbage leaves.
PREPARE THE TOMATO SAUCE:
- In a bowl, mix together crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, salt, and pepper.
BAKE:
- Pour the tomato sauce over the cabbage rolls, ensuring they are well-covered.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until the cabbage rolls are cooked through.
SERVE:
- Carefully remove the cabbage rolls from the baking dish and place them on a serving platter.
- Spoon some of the tomato sauce over the top, and serve the stuffed cabbage rolls hot.
Enjoy your delicious homemade stuffed cabbage rolls! They are often served with a side of mashed potatoes or crusty bread.
